Jeff Zucker named CNN's New Chief Executive

The former NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker has been named president of CNN Worldwide on 29 November 2012.
Jeff Zucker is going to lead a large and profitable news organization with 23 separate businesses worldwide that has come to be defined by problems at the flagship U.S. network, particularly in prime time.
He will succeed outgoing CNN chief Jim Walton starting in January 2013.

Zucker started his 25-year career with NBC as a researcher for NBC Sports’ coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympic Games and rose to president and chief executive officer of NBC Universal.  He was named executive producer of Today in January 1992; under his eight-year leadership, the program was the most-watched morning news show and the most profitable program on television.

NASA’s Mercury-orbiting probe discovered ice on the planet

Scientists of NASA have discovered a huge mass of ice at Mercury’s North Pole on 29 November 2012. Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun. These findings come from the Mercury-orbiting probe of NASA, Messenger.

Frozen water is found in the North Pole regions of Mercury which are always found in shadows and mainly affects the craters. It is supposed that the south pole of mercury also has ice but there is no hard and fast data which supports this. Messenger orbits closer to the North Pole than South Pole.

Scientist from the Johns Hopkins University opined that if all this is added, the total amount of ice comes out to be 100 billion to 1 trillion metric tons. The only thing that is uncertain is how deep it lies.

It is thought that the ice is approximately 1.5 feet or 0.5 metres deep or possibly, around 65 feet deep as well. The amount of ice found at Mercury is enough to bury the area the size of Washington D.C. by around 2.5 miles deep.

The radar measurements analysed from Earth had suggested existence of ice on Mercury’s poles for two decades. Because of the Messenger, the results have been confirmed now. The water, it seemed, came from impacting comets and possibly even the asteroids. Ice was found at Mercury’s surface and also buried under the dark organic material.

It is very important to note that presence of ice on Mercury does not necessarily indicate that there is a possibility of life on Mercury. But it is evidence that Mercury might support life, considering the presence of water on its surface. Over the years, Mercury has also become a subject of astrobiological interest.

About Messenger

Messenger was launched back in 2004. It is a NASA spacecraft orbiting around Mercury. The observations through NASA’s Messenger will continue in the next year as well.

Saina Nehwal and Mary Kom are the national Icon of Election Commission of India

London Olympic medallists Saina Nehwal and MC Mary Kom have been designated as "national icons" by the election commission to help promote voter participation in polls.

The poll body already has former President APJ Abdul Kalam and Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni as its other "national icons".

Sources in the election commission said 22-year-old Saina Nehwal and Mary Kom, 29, who had won bronze medals in London Olympics 2012 in badminton and boxing respectively, will help in boosting women participation during the forthcoming elections.

Nehwal has earlier been the EC's 'state icon' in Andhra Pradesh. She has now been elevated as its 'national icon'.

The commission has been using the services of prominent personalities across the country to help increase voter awareness and participation, and fight the public apathy towards elections.
Kalam and Dhoni have earlier helped the poll body in its campaigns for increasing voter participation in elections.

Before this in the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in South Korea and Japan, Luiz Felipe Scolari led the Brazilian side as its coach, the team which was declared the winner of the tournament. His recent recruitment at the position of coach would give him a time of 18 months to guide the Brazilian Football Team to win the next World Cup at its home. He would be guiding the team during the FIFA Confederations Cup that is scheduled to be organized in June 2013 in Brazil.

Biggest Ever Black Hole Discovered in the Small Galaxy NGC 1277

Astronomers claimed that they have discovered the biggest ever black hole in the small galaxy called NGC 1277 which is situated around 250 million light years away from our planet. This galaxy constitutes the mass equal to 17 billion suns. The biggest ever black hole sits in the NGC 1277 galaxy in Perseus constellation.

This gigantic black hole forms around 14 percent of the mass of host galaxy. When compared with the 0.1 per cent of the usual black hole, this massive black hole adds the mass which is equal to 17 billion suns.

The NGC 1277 galaxy as well as many others would alter the theories about how these galaxies and black holes evolve. This galaxy is merely 10 percent of the mass as well as size of the Milky Way, the galaxy in which Earth is situated. Even though the size of NGC 1277 galaxy is small, but the gigantic black hole which sits in the galaxy is 11 times wider as the orbit of Neptune around the Sun.

A team member of the discovery at The University of Texas at Austin claimed that the galaxy is almost the black hole and possibly this was the first object in the genre of galaxy-black hole systems. Apart from this, the gigantic black holes were also observed in huge blobby galaxies known as ellipticals.

Astronomers observed that at the moment there were three mechanisms which explained association of black holes with the properties of their host galaxies. However which of these theories best explains the association is still under confusion. The primary issue is the lack of proper data. Astronomers merely have the mass of less than 100 black holes found in the galaxies. However, measuring the mass of black holes is time consuming and cumbersome at the same time.

Consequently, the astronomers have developed Hobby-Eberly Telescope Massive Galaxy Survey in order to know about the galaxies which are worth following up. Astronomers studied about 700 galaxies out of 800 using their telescope.

Arctic Sea Ice Melting Area Larger Than the Area of US

UN weather agency claimed that the area of Arctic Sea ice, which even huger than the US had melted in 2012. It demonstrated that climate change was very evident. The report by UN weather agency was released at the UN climate talks which are taking place in Doha, Qatar at present. World Meteorological Organization (WMO) claimed that this Arctic sea ice melting was extreme and record-breaking which had hit the Earth in 2012.

The instances of climate change were very much evident this year because droughts ruined almost 2/3rd of United States and western Russia as well as southern Europe. On the other hand, floods swamped West Africa. Heat waves were leaving Northern Hemisphere scorching. However, what dominated over everything was that the ice cover was reaching record lowest, especially in North Pole from March to September. The area of ice melt was 11.83 million square kilometers, which is even larger than the area of US.

WMO has the concern that the rate at which ice is melting is alarming and the changes are evident in turn on the oceans and biosphere of Earth. The reason why this is happening is because of the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in atmosphere, which is reaching record high.

There is an attempt to ensure that temperature does not rise over 2°C in the preindustrial times. As of now, the temperatures have risen around 0.8°C.

SAT Declined Accepting Sahara Investor Money, Also Dismissed The Plea

The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) on 29 November 2012 dismissed appeals of two Sahara companies- Sahara India Real Estate Corp (SIRECL) and Sahara Housing Investment Corp (SHICL) against SEBI. Sahara wanted SAT to intervene in the issue of refunding the money of investors which is aggregating to around 24000 crore Rupees.

The Sahara companies had indicted SEBI on the grounds that it had wrongly charged the two for not abiding by the order given by the Supreme Court in context with the refunds to around 3 crore investors. After the order of SAT, the Sahara lawyer opined that SIRECL and SHICL offered the payment of 5120 crore to SAT because SEBI did not accept it, but it was also not accepted by SAT in reference to the decision of Supreme Court.

On 29 November 2012, SAT have order that any further directions would only be given by the SC and therefore it dismissed the appeal. SAT also mentioned that contempt petition filed by SEBI as well as the review petition by the two Sahara companies against SC order given on 31 August 2012 were also pending before SC

Indian economy to grow at 6.5% in 2013: Goldman Sachs

Indian economy is likely to grow by 6.5 per cent in 2013 driven by favourable external demand outlook and domestic structural reforms push, a Goldman Sachs report said on Thursday.
According to a research note by the investment banking major, growth is likely to pick up gradually to 6.5 per cent in 2013 and further to 7.2 per cent in 2014.
This is on the back of “easing financial conditions, in part driven by some reduction in policy rates, a continuation of reforms boosting confidence, and a normal agricultural crop,” it said.
The report further noted India’s GDP growth is likely to accelerate from 5.4 per cent in 2012 to 7.2 per cent in 2014, and remain high through 2015-2016, provided government continues with its reforms push.
A continuation of structural reforms is an important assumption underlying these views, it said.
“While allowing FDI in retail, the Goods and Services Tax, direct cash transfer of subsidies, and dedicated freight corridor will help, we believe further reforms on fiscal consolidation, financial liberalisation and infrastructure growth will be needed to sustain an improvement in trend growth,” the report said.
The government’s recent reforms include allowing FDI in multi-brand retail, aviation, hiking diesel price, capping the number of subsidised LPG cylinders, opening up pension sector to foreign investment and raising the FDI cap in insurance to 49 per cent.
The reforms “which have begun in earnest”, and are likely to progress on a number of different fronts, should help in boosting trend growth.
However, the near-term outlook remains “difficult” due to still weak growth, high inflation, and the twin deficits, Goldman Sachs said and added that quick upturn in the investment cycle is “unlikely”.
India had been growing around 8-9 per cent before the global financial meltdown of 2008. The growth rate in 2011-12 slipped to a nine-year low of 6.5 per cent and in the quarter ended June 30, 2012, the economy grew by 5.5 per cent.
The government expects the economy to expand by 5.5 - 6 per cent this fiscal.
On inflation, the report said headline inflation is likely to remain high through Q3 of 2013, before gradually coming off due to a waning of food and oil shocks.
The WPI Inflation declined marginally to 7.45 per cent in October, from 7.81 per cent in September but was way above the RBI’s comfort zone of 5-5.5 per cent.
“We forecast the Reserve Bank of India to cut policy rates by 50 bp in each of 2013, 2014 and 2015,” Goldman Sachs said adding that “elevated core inflation prevents a more aggressive near-term easing”.
The next mid-quarter review of monetary policy for 2012-13 would take place on December 18.

India & Sweden signed social security agreement in New Delhi

India and Sweden signed a social security agreement in New Delhi on 26 November 2012. This agreement will help both the countries in more investment and work opportunities for nationals of India and Sweden. It will also encourage more and more Indians to go to Sweden for employment opportunities and vice versa.  Approximately, 156 Swedish companies are operating in India and expressed the hope that this agreement will encourage Swedish people to come in large numbers to India. In fact, India is the first Asian country with which Sweden has signed this type of agreement.

The Social Security Agreement will enhance cooperation on social security between the two countries. The Agreement will provide following benefits to Indian nationals working in Sweden:

a) For short term contract up to two years, no social contribution would need to be paid under the Swedish law by the detached workers provided they continue to make social security payment in India.

b) The above benefits shall be available even when the Indian company sends its employees to Sweden from a third country.

c) Indian workers shall be entitled to the export of the social security benefit if they relocate to India after the completion of their service in Sweden.

d) The self-employed Indians in Sweden would also be entitled to export of social security benefit of their relocation to India.

e) The period of contribution in one contracting state will be added to the period of contribution in the second contracting state for determining the eligibility of social security benefits.

There are about 18000 Overseas Indians in Sweden, most of whom are working as professional and self-employed. However, there is a huge potential for Indian workers to take employment in Sweden owing to the huge labour supply gap in the market. As such, a bilateral Social Security Agreement with Sweden is a significant requirement from the futuristic point of view to take advantage of the emerging employment opportunities and to strengthen the trade and investment between the two countries. India has singed similar agreements with Belgium, Germany, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Hungary, Denmark, Czech Republic, the Republic of Korea, Norway, Finland, Canada and Japan.

India Ranks 78th in the rule of Law Index

India ranks 78th among 97 countries in guaranteeing access to all civil justice, a latest report released while its neighbouring country Sri Lanka leads the South Asian nations in most dimensions of the rule of law.
The ‘Rule of Law Index 2012’ report by World Justice Project provides country-by-country scores and rankings for eight areas of the rule of law.
India, the report said, has a robust system of checks and balances (ranked thirty-seventh worldwide and second among lower middle-income countries), an independent judiciary, strong protections for freedom of speech, and a relatively open government (ranking fiftieth globally and fourth among lower-middle income countries).
“Administrative agencies do not perform well (ranking 79th) and the civil court system ranks poorly (ranking 78) mainly because of deficiencies in the areas of court congestion, enforcement, and delays in processing cases,” the report said.
“Corruption is a significant problem (ranking 83rd), and police discrimination and abuses are not unusual. Order and security — including crime, civil conflict, and political violence — is a serious concern (ranked second lowest in the world),” the report observed.
According to the report, Sri Lanka outperforms its regional peers in all but two dimensions of the rule of law.
Pakistan shows weaknesses in most dimensions when compared to its regional and income group peers, the report said.

Kidney transplant pioneer Joseph Murray dies

Dr. Joseph E. Murray, who performed the world’s first successful kidney transplant and won a Nobel Prize for his pioneering work, has died at age 93.
Murray’s death in Boston was confirmed on Monday by Brigham and Women’s Hospital spokesman Tom Langford. No cause of death was immediately announced.
Since the first kidney transplants on identical twins, hundreds of thousands of transplants on a variety of organs have been performed worldwide. Murray shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1990 with Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, who won for his work in bone marrow transplants.
“Kidney transplants seem so routine now,” Murray told The New York Times after he won the Nobel. “But the first one was like Lindbergh’s flight across the ocean.”
Murray’s breakthroughs did not come without criticism, from ethicists and religious leaders. Some people “felt that we were playing God and that we shouldn’t be doing all of these, quote, experiments on human beings,” he told The Associated Press in a 2004 interview in which he also spoke out in favour of stem cell research.
In the early 1950s, there had never been a successful human organ transplant. Murray and his associates at Boston’s Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, now Brigham and Women’s Hospital, developed new surgical techniques, gaining knowledge by successfully transplanting kidneys on dogs. In December 1954, they found the right patients, 23-year-old Richard Herrick, who had end-stage kidney failure, and his identical twin, Ronald Herrick.
Because of their identical genetic background, they did not face the biggest problem with transplant patients, the immune system’s rejection of foreign tissue.
After the operation, Richard had a functioning kidney transplanted from Ronald. Richard lived another eight years, marrying a nurse he met at the hospital and having two children.
“Post-operatively the transplanted kidney functioned immediately with a dramatic improvement in the patient’s renal and cardiopulmonary status,” Murray said in his Nobel lecture. “This spectacular success was a clear demonstration that organ transplantation could be life-saving.”
Murray performed more transplants on identical twins over the next few years and tried kidney transplants on other relatives, including fraternal twins, learning more about how to suppress the immune system’s rejection of foreign tissue. One patient who received a kidney transplant from a fraternal twin in 1959, plus radiation and a bone marrow transplant to suppress his immune response, lived for 29 more years.
But it was the development of drugs to suppress the body’s immune response, a less radical approach than radiation, that made real breakthroughs in transplants possible. In 1962, Murray and his team successfully completed the first organ transplant from an unrelated donor. The 23-year-old patient, Mel Doucette, received a kidney from a man who had died.
Murray continued a long career in plastic surgery, his original specialty, and transplants. He was guided by his own deep religious convictions.
“Work is a prayer,” he told the Harvard University Gazette in 2001. “And I start off every morning dedicating it to our Creator.”

New Version of Internet Addresses available in India

Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN) has started issuing next version of Internet addresses ‘IPv6’, which would make it easy for security agencies to identify each Internet user. The Internet addresses under the present version IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4), are limited and service providers often assign single IP address to many users, making it difficult to identify the end user.“The number of IPv6 addresses available is enormous. ISPs (Internet Service Providers) can allocate an IP address to their users. People can be easily identified if they are using IPv6,” APNIC Director (Services and Operations) Sanjaya said at the roadshow for new version IPv6.APNIC, which is one of the five authorised bodies for issuing Internet addresses, has recognised Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN) for issuing IP addresses in India. IRINN has been set-up under the state-run NIXI.

Alok Joshi appointed as next RAW chief

Alok Joshi has been appointed as chief of country's external intelligence gathering agency-- Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).According to an official order, Joshi(59), a 1976 batch officer of Haryana Cadre who is at present Special Secretary in RAW, will take over the reins of the key agency on December 30.

About the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW):
Research and Analysis Wing is India's external security agency. Working directly under the Prime Minister, the structure and operations of the Research & Analysis Wing are kept secret from Parliament. It was formed in September 1968 under the helmsman-ship of its first Director, R. N. Kao. Its creation was necessitated by the poor performance of the Intelligence Bureau (IB, which then handled both internal and external intelligence) in the wars against China (1962) and the Pakistan (1965) convinced the government that a specialized, independent agency was required for competent external intelligence gathering.
Numerous missions were assigned to RAW upon its creation. These included monitoring political and military developments in neighboring countries that affects Indian national security. Consequently, considerable attention is paid by RAW to Pakistan and China, countries that are traditional rivals of India.
In 1968, RAW had 250 agents and a budget of Rs. 2 crore. This has expanded to a 2000 total of an estimated eight to ten thousand agents and a budget that experts place at Rs. 1500 crore, alternately estimated at $145 million.
The primary objectives of RAW:

  • To monitor the political and military developments in adjoining countries, which have direct bearing on India's national security and in the formulation of its foreign policy.
  • To seek the control and limitation of the supply of military hardware to Pakistan, mostly from European countries, the USA and China.

Nitish Kumar is Foreign policy's top 100 global thinkers

Credited worldwide for turning around the state of Bihar, Nitish Kumar has been listed by the prestigious Foreign Policy magazine among its top 100 global thinkers, a list that is topped by Aung Saan Sui Kyi and Thein Sein, and also features Salman Rushdie and Malala Yousufzai.

The third spot is shared jointly by the 'ultimate power couple' Bill and Hillary Clinton for being America's "most effective advocates for liberal internationalism".

Kumar figures at the 77th spot and finds the place for his achievement of "turning around India's poorest state" through an array of innovative programmes to address crime, corruption and lack of development.

The list of 100 also features India's chief economic advisor Raghuram Rajan at 80 and writer Pankaj Mishra at 86.

In an ironic but interesting feature, Myanmar's democracy icon Suu Kyi has been bracketed with her tormentor-turned-ally Thein Sein, the military ruler, as the two leaders together chart out a non-military future for their country.

The annual list of top 100 global thinkers of the world released by the prestigious Foreign Policy, published from the US, includes a record half-a-dozen Pakistani nationals including Malala and Husain Haqqani, the former Pakistani Ambassador to the US, who has been ranked at 61st spot along with his wife Farahnaz Ispahani.

Among other Indian and people of Indian origin to make it to the list include, economist Narayana Kocherlakota, who has been ranked 10th; Morgan Stanley managing director, Ruchir Sharma (67), World Bank Managing Director, Sri Mulyani Indrawati (72), Avaaz's Executive Editor, Ricken Patel (89), and immigration-expert Vivek Wadhwa (90)

Maldives Cabinet For Termination of GMR Contract

Maldives cabinet has recommended termination of a contract given to GMR Group for developing Male Airport, a project awarded to the Indian group during the previous regime of island nation.
The Maldives cabinet in a meeting today decided to terminate the contract and a notice to this effect was issued to GMR Group, Maldivian President's Press Secretary Masood Imad said in a statement.
The USD 500-million project was hanging in balance ever since the regime change in Maldives earlier this year. The GMR group had won the contract during the regime of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Some coalition partners of the current regime headed by Mohamed Waheed had also held a rally against GMR on November 3.
The airport contract was awarded to GMR through a 10-month long global competitive bidding process run by the then Maldivian government headed by Nasheed.

Nearly eight months after the regime change in Maldives, some Indian companies present there, including GMR, are blaming political interference for creating "undue challenges" for them.

New Drug Discovered that can Halt Cancer from Multiplying

Scientists in the last week of November 2012 developed a new drug called Aflibercept for stopping the cancerous cells from multiplying. The new drug compels the cancerous cells to sleep which in turn stops them in multiplying. The drug is said to trick the tumours for becoming inactive by swapping the molecular switches in cancer structure so that there is no multiplication of the cancerous cells.
The drug had shown positive results in UK, where scientists performed trials on the patients. The patients had shown significant life extension. There were over 1400 patients involved in the trial and some of these were also suffering from advanced bowel cancer. These patients with advanced bowel cancer had already gone through chemotherapy which prolonged their life by two years.
Scientists believe that the drug would be useful across a wide range of cancers in the future studies. Aflibercept in comparison to the conventional drugs had statistically better survival benefits for treating bowel cancer which had spread even after initial treatment.

china city to plan nehru museum

Fifty years on after the end of the India-China war on November 21, 1962, a Chinese city has announced plans to open a museum to commemorate a much-forgotten visit by Jawaharlal Nehru to China in the autumn of 1939.
Chongqing, a municipality in southwest China that hosted Nehru when it was the wartime capital of Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government under the Kuomintang (KMT), plans to mark his visit to the city by opening a museum at the site of the old Indian Embassy residence building, which is today a protected heritage site.
Nehru sailed up the Yangtze river and arrived in the city as a guest of the KMT leader in August 1939, according to city officials. An essay by scholar Lin Chengjie noted, drawing on press reports from the time, that Nehru was “honoured as the great leader of the Indian people” and as “an intimate friend of China” for showing solidarity during the war with Japan. Nehru also reached out to the Communists, who were then in their revolutionary base of Yan’an, and received an invitation from Mao Zedong to visit. The Second World War, however, forced Nehru to return early to India.
The India-China war in 1962 dramatically altered Chinese perception of Nehru, who was in subsequent years vilified by the State media — upon Mao Zedong’s direction — as a “bourgeois Imperialist.” More recently, however, Nehru’s role in promoting relations — even during the time of the KMT, a period usually portrayed by the Communist Party only in negative terms — has been given more prominent attention, as the Chongqing initiative suggests, with the 1962 war a fading memory in China today.
The sprawling old Indian Embassy residence building, where Nehru stayed sits on a remote hilltop in the Nanshan mountains. The foggy mountains were a popular site for government and Embassy residences in the 1930s, seen as providing shelter from Japanese air-raids. Today, the estate is the site of the Chongqing Nanshan Botanical Gardens — a popular tourist destination during the Cherry Blossoms season — and also houses old residences belonging to the Spanish, French and Russian Embassies.

Kejriwal’s party was named ‘Aam Admi Party’

Arvind Kejriwal’s party was  named ‘Aam Admi Party’ at a meeting of its founder members here during which the Constitution for the organisation was also adopted.
The meeting of around 300 founder members was held at Constitution Club here during which Kejriwal proposed the name of the party which was accepted by other members, sources said.
The Constitution of the party was also adopted at the meeting. It was proposed by Mayank Gandhi and seconded by Chandramohan, they said.
The formation of the party came after a bitter split with Anna Hazare over the question of the anti-corruption movement taking a political plunge as Kejriwal desired.
During the August fast, Hazare and Kejriwal ended the agitation saying they will work for providing a political alternative for the country to fight both Congress and BJP.
However, both Hazare and Kejriwal announced a parting of ways on September 19 following differences over forming a party with the former sticking to his position that the movement should remain apolitical.
On October 2, Kejriwal announced the formation of the party saying its official launch will be on November 26, the day the Constitution was adopted in 1949.

BBC Appointed Tony Hall as its New Director General

Royal Opera House chief executive Tony Hall on 22 November 2012 was appointed as director general of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation).

UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Announced 1650 Crore Rupees Agri Loan waiver

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on 22 November 2012 announced an agricultural loan waiver worth 1650 crore Rupees which is supposed to benefit about half a million small and marginal farmers.

The agricultural loan waiver is applied to farmers who had taken up to 50000 rupees of loan from the UP Sahkari Gram Vikas Bank (UPSGVB) against farm land as security.
The provision is that the borrower should have repaid at least a tenth of the principal amount by March 31, to be eligible. The waiver would include both the principal due and interest on it.

In its proposal for legislative assembly poll, the Samajwadi Party led by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav promised earlier in 2012 that they are going to stop the practice of Auctioning farmer’s land to recover loan dues.

The dark point of the loan waiver scheme is that it does not cover agricultural loans by other cooperative banks and other financial institutions but the positive thing is that number of beneficiaries to the scheme is around 720000 farmers and it is also going to reduce the non-performing assets of UPSGVB and strengthen its financial position.

The government of Uttar Pradesh had already made budgetary provision of 500 crore rupees for the scheme and more allocation would be made in the coming budget.

Makemake, the Massive Dwarf Planet of Solar System Has No Atmosphere

Astronomers from Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia, CSIC, Spain in the third week of November 2012 discovered that the distant drawf planet called Makemake, which is 2/3rd that of Pluto in size does not have atmosphere. Planet makemake revolves around sun in its distant route which lies away from Pluto. This distance is closer to sun than Eris’, the massive dwarf planet in entire solar system.

In the previous observations it was found that Makemake was quite like the fellow dwarf planets which compelled some astronomers to believe that it had atmosphere, maybe like that of Pluto. But in the new study it was discovered that Makemake does not have significant atmosphere. The team that carried out the study combined the observations from three telescopes- New Technology Telescope, Very Large Telescope and TRAPPIST (TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope) at European Southern Observatory's La Silla and Paranal observing sites in Chile.

The new observations of the team will add many more details to discover about Makemake. The details will include finding the size more precisely and estimating the density of the planet.

Governing council chairman or IPL, Rajeev Shukla welcomed Pepsi to central sponsorship pool of Pepsi.

Some of the industry analysts believed that Pepsi might have overpaid for acquiring these rights. PepsiCo vice-president insisted that it was worth the deal because IPL had emerged as major sporting event which has the capability of competing against any event across world.

Device Developed to Imitate Dog’s Nose for Detecting Explosives by Martin Moskovits and Carl Meinhart

Dogs are known for their olfactory sense. Imitating the same sense, scientists from the University of California in the third week of November 2012 designed the nanotech chip that can smell presence of the molecules from a bomb within a few seconds.

According to the researchers, this nanotech chip is portable, absolutely sensitive and accurate which can smell the vapours from the explosives as well as other substances. This could become very common in future just like the smoke detectors found in the public places.

Researchers who were led by professors Martin Moskovits and Carl Meinhart designed the detector which makes use of the microfluidic nanotechnology in order to imitate biological mechanism used behind canine scent receptors. This device is not just very sensitive for tracing the amount of specific vapour molecules but can also tell about specific substances besides the similar molecules.

The device has been designed with the similar or even better sensitivity just like the nose of the dogs. Results of the study depict that this device can also detect the airborne molecules of the 2, 4-dinitrotoluene, mainly the vapours which emanate from the TNT-based explosives.

Super-Jupiter, the Largest Planet of Our Solar System Discovered

Astrophysicists at the University of Toronto in the third week of November 2012 discovered a new planet called Super-Jupiter which is thirteen times enormous than Jupiter. This is the largest planet discovered in the solar system.
Super-Jupiter orbits around the star known as Kappa Andromedae which is 2.5 times greater than the Sun’s mass and is situated at 170 light years farther than the Earth. The star is quite young, 30 million years old, while the sun is 5 billion years old.
The planet is called Super-Jupiter because it is larger than the Jupiter planet. According to the astrophysicists, Super-Jupiter could represent first newly discovered exoplanet system in the time duration of 4 years and it has mass which is at least thirteen times more than Jupiter. The orbit of the planet is a bit larger than that of Neptune.

Kappa Andromedae, which is said to be the host star of this newly discovered planet, is the highest mass star to host a planet which was directly observed.
